Hey everyone, I thought I'd bring this website to your attention www.dirtcheapcds.com.auIt's a CD store that sells all albums on site for $10. The only exception is CDs that are currently charting or only just released which sell for $15 (which is still great for a new release CD) All the stock is brand new and there's a pretty big selection. Sydney people may recognise this- there's a shop on Pitt St, at Darlinghurst and at Bondi Beach. There's also a store in Melbourne on Collins St. You can order online, postage is an extra $3.95 for a single CD, $5.70 for 2 etc. Therefore, you can buy two albums for $25.70 and have them delivered right to your door. Not bad if I do say so myself, especially when you compare it to a HMV Christmas '2 Albums for $40' deal. Here's an example of this shops insane cheapness- www.dirtcheapcds.com.au/productDisplay.php?id=563&cdOrDVD=0Incubus - Make Yourself - $10. www.hmv.com.au/product/rockpop.asp?sku=698445HMV Price - $32.99 Hope you guys find something you like and enjoy the savings -Collette

I have been into the Pitt Street store a couple of times and whilst you have to wade through a lot of shit music, I have found a couple of good C.Ds.

Looks pretty good. Are you sure they aren't cheap knock off cd's?

No, I'm pretty sure they're real. I've so far bought Incubus 'Science' and David Gray 'Sell Sell Sell' there and they seem to be genuine - the music quality is fine like any normal CD, the artwork is good quality just like any normal CD... I can't see anything with any of the CDs yet that would suggest they are knock-offs ala Parklea Markets. I think Deane bought a couple when he was down here once too

Dirt Cheap is awesome. THey now have a competitor though, up the road on pitt st. but yeh their oxford street store is the best in terms of having less crap.
they have some great stuff there though, and they for some reason have entire back catalogues of bands like pavement and sonic youth.

Well.... because people will buy more CDs and come back? Sounds ignorant, probably is.... but they're likely to get more customers when people know they could be paying $10 for a CD rather than $25 in Sanity. And maybe while they're there they'll buy some more CDs.... and tell their friends about it.... and come back next Tuesday..... who knows

I think the cost price of CDs is much much lower than the usual $25 that most places charge.
Anyone here work in retail who can find out how much they actually are at cost price?

well all i know is that with the GST cd prices were meant to go DOWN... to at least $20. and they didn't at all because no one realised and protested.
i used to work at HMV, i never found out how much cds cost them to get in, but i do know that they only put real security tags on import cds or ones from independent labels that dont sell much. all the others they put dummy tags on because they're not that valuable - there's so many of them. so yeh, cds arent that valuable, we're just duped.

You can pretty much find any cd for under $20 if you look hard enough. Especially with popular cds.
Hmm, I should correct that. You will find most cds on major labels under $20 easily. Just the indie ones that cost a bit.
Oh, and i'm pretty sure there's a huge markup on cds by the major retailers. Probably about 2.5 times the cost to the store.

I was looking for Sarah Blasko's album the other day, $25 at HMV on "special", so I went over to JB and it was $18, no special tag anywhere. Obviously JB are still making money out of it, they wouldn't be selling stuff at a loss. (Mind you, when I picked up Pollyanna's "Didn't Feel A Thing" as a digipak for $2, I had to wonder.) I always see Elsewhere and Q&A for about $10, too. Surely they're still making money off that $10, so just how much are HMV making on a CD? It's scary.

I remember often seeing the cost price of brand new albums when I worked in the music departments at Harris Scarfe and David Jones a few years back. Don’t quote me but I think the cost price of brand new albums was something like $12.00. If that’s the case then perhaps Dirt Cheap CDs gets a discount off that price for buying in bulk and for buying old stock and then makes a few dollars profit by selling the CDs at $10 each.
Just a theory.
