Yeah well XIS is severely dodgy, in my area anyway, and just for anyone else reading the thread here's what happened:
My ISP (their provider) decided to pack it in or *something* I still haven't been told exactly what went wrong, but anyway, I couldn't dial in for about 2 weeks and the support line at XIS has like 1 guy on the end of it. So you end up getting messages saying you're calling out of business hours at 2PM in the arvo etc.
Anyway, it's working now but I'm not impressed with the service so far, especially the lack of support though I do feel for the 1 guy on the phone taking no doubt hundreds of calls from irate customers.
Now to the topic of the thread - the main reason we went to IRC was for ease of file sharing. Originally (as you would recall) AudioGalaxy turned out to just be a major leeching frenzy and no one would talk/participate in the forum so this is why we went to IRC.
The other reason for using IRC specifically is that you can get self-automated "scripts" to send/receive/queue/play mp3s for you, make an mp3 list etc.
It's turned out pretty good so far I think, as most MP3 channels take quite a while to grow in regular visitor numbers (without spamming it). A section on the main site telling people how to join and some basics of it might help too.

yeah, i dont mind irc at all. i just wish more people had more mp3s i wanted. and they were on more often. but what can you do.

(sorry, couldn't resist a Tori/NIN reference. BTW, did you know (useless Tori/NIN trivia coming up here) that Tori coined the phrase 'starfucker'and Trent adopted it, rather than the more common Tori-takes-Trent's-phrase occurence ('pretty hate machine', 'nine inch nails')?
