i'll post the full interview in off-topic tonight. here's a bit about SFK, though (i told him y'all were enthusiatic about me interviewing him, and we talked about SFK for a while):
"Something for Kate fans are really full-on, and Something for Kate have that air of intellectualism about them; so it surprises me that people who are into that could be into us, cos we’re dumb shits. It really does surprise me. In fact, Something For Kate - fuck! They could be MASSIVE in America. Their sound… I reckon emo kids would LOVE those guys! That whole emo scene would fuckin’ dig it! The lyrics: emo kids love that shit. If someone has the balls to put their record out I think they’ll do really well."

my friend nathan gave me an alterno-emo compilation CD the other day, and i have to say it rocks! i've always loved The Get Up Kids (who toured with Jebediah in 2000) but i'd never really ventured further into emo, and some of the more brash youthy-emo turned me off. anyone heard of Elliot? they're an AMAZING group. as a kewl postscript, nathan runs a radio station here in canberra and he played submarine by SFK today! (i put it on a CD for him and he loved it

Elliot rings a bell, yeah
Jimmy Eat World are pretty cool...and I hafta say I really like Samiam...though I guess it's more punky than emo...but it's really really good

Elliot are AWESOME! track down their CD "False Cathedrals". one of my favourite albums of last year! it was released in 2000 on Revelation records. great emo CD produced by Tobias Miller.

At the risk of sounding like a complete plonker, what does emo mean? I've been hearing this alot lately and have no clue about these things hehe. I think the band should start paying Glen a commission for spreading the wonder that is SFK around the world...NZ, USA, UK, Upper Mongolia?

as far as i know "emo" is just short for emotional rock music. so obviously this genre could cover a shit load of bands... but it's bands like Jimmy Eat World, Get Up Kids, Elliot, Sunday's Best etc... that describe the sound of emo. hope that kinda helps you understand

Thanks Econo - i had no idea what 'emo' meant either. It is a bit of a worry to put labels on bands however, somehow sfk don't equate with other so called emo bands like 'creed' etc... (sounds like the old country debate to me )

Econo, i JUST finished playing False Cathedrals! spooky! and yeah, i LOVE it. Tobias and the group have got an incredible soundscape going on, with simple yet elegant and emotive production. "voices" just makes me tingle... the way it segues into "calm americans" is bliss!
and BTW, i thought emo was a shortening of "emotive punk" rather than "emotional rock" - but it's prolly been lost in the mists of time and doesn't really make much difference. it is important to recognise punk as a parent of emo, though.
as for SFK comparisons, a facet of emo is articulate, poetic and sophisticated lyrical content. emo lyrics read like intense, arty poetry, rather than plain song lyrics, and SFK can be likened to emo in that way more than any other (in fact, Kevin mentioned SFK lyrics in particular when we were talking).
oh yeah, and my fave emo bands are The Get Up Kids and Elliot.
;D
