This thread wasn't about evil covers or good covers, it was about how some really great bands and artists (and I'm by no means including Mr Andre as being great) seem to have their covers song played more than their own quality songs. Troy Dann, my man (I'm a poet and I didn't even know that I had the capabilities of being so), I was going to say Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah but asking around I got one response of Last Goodbye (but that was from a fan so it doesn't count) and more reposes of "Who the f**k is Jeff Buckley?" and really that negated any further need to mention him. Interestingly enough Wikipedia says "Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was a highlight, and is considered by many to be the definitive recording of that song; it might also be Buckley's best-known song." And not that you need to hear it from me, but your call is validated. I also agree Cake will be remembered for so much more than I Will Survive. As for Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal, I would agree that they will be best remembered for that, but unless your asking their family and friends, I'm not sure they'll qualify as a great band with other notable work. Being 32 years old, and being a child of the (very) late 70's, more so the 80's and lesser extent 90's I find it "cute" the responses of "oh that song is a cover?" To the list I'm adding; The Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson (Again from wikipedia; However, a cover of "Mrs. Robinson" (recorded to promote the video release of The Graduate) was released to the annoyance of the band and got them the most exposure they'd had so far.) Bananarama - Venus (Again not saying they are great but they do fit the criteria I set out in this thread) From wikipedia again "In 1986 the group's production duties were taken up by Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), which resulted in the international number-one hit "Venus" (a remake of Shocking Blue's number-one hit from 1970), whose dance-oriented beats typified the SAW approach to pop production." I'm thinkingf SAW had a lot to do with the uprising of pop idols doing covers to launch their careers. Dumb shits!!!!!!!!!!! Even saying that though, it's funny how some people think that doing a cover can only mean that you are a sell-out. And if it brings you exposure and you can go on to get further credability, then that can't be a bad thing. If you are in the midst of your career and you decide to do one (and surely if it sounds great you record company may release it against your wishes), that's not so bad. But it is if you peak at that point. That's how you get labelled a band who is famous for their cover version. At work I have a FNM fan who named Easy as his first selection when I asked him to name song titles from the Angel Dust album. It's funny but he went on to say that small Victory is his favourite FNM song, and that's on the same album. How screwed up is that? ?? If, like DJ Sammy (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm doing this one from memory), you only do cover versions and add a techno beat and have some "hot chick" sing it and dance around in the film clip, then really mate, your career is simply that, a career. Not art, and it's a no brainer. Doosh, doosh, doosh Boy of Summer, doosh, doosh, doosh, Heaven, doosh, doosh, doosh, (insert next cover song)......................

The AAF drummer was a rockin' drummer and the bassist was a talented kid (if extremely annoying).
Movies was an alright song, I never really got into them though.

Bluehighlighter, dude, there is NO WAY that Nirvana or Guns'n'Roses or Pearl Jam would ever be defined by covers. People can be shot for saying less than that. I might have a dig at The Vines with that silly Miss Jackson song....and then of course there is The Wrights...... And didn't Cake actually write "The Distance" and "Short Skirt, Long Jacket"?

I'm just a little pissed off that the cover songs they do often get played more than the songs we should best remember them for.
I have another to add, and this is the lamest I've thought of so far;
Shannon Noll - What About Me?
The only reason I mention that is because my ex went and saw him last night (hence the reason she's an ex) and when I saw her earlier in the day she said I can't wait for him to do that song. Surely a true Nollsy fan would want to hear any other song. (Maybe she's not a true fan, that'd be it. I new there was good in her. I had to love for some reason).
