Evening kids. I'm looking into purchasing an mp3 player, and just wanted to know what everyone thinks about different brands. If you have any at all (iRiver, iPod, Nomad, whatever -- 512mb, 40gig, whatever) I'd love to know what you think. (How long have you had it, have you had any issues with it, what's the transfer speed like, it is easy to use, where did you buy it, how much did it cost, do you like it, so onnnn?) Even if you don't own one and have heard something about it, or work where they sell some, anything! I'd appreciate any help at all, as it's a big investment and I don't want to shit away $600 on something I don't really like. (Oh, and has anyone heard anything about this www.apple.com.au/ipodshuffle/ yet? I just heard about it, and it looks kind of funky.) MELLY LOVES YOU.

iPods are all the hype. Especially those mini ones.
Things I will not have in an mp3 player I buy are moving parts, so nothing that uses a hard drive. It has to be solid state memory for me. And it has to have more than 1gb of space. Anything less is shit.
Apparently the iPod minis are solid state (correct me if that isn't true). I've heard that batteries in iPods wear out after about 1.5-2 years and they are non removable or something, so you can't just buy a new battery. It's pretty much a throw-it-away job. This mayb have been the iPod mini, but I' not sure.
For some reason I don't like iPods. Because they are Apple I guess. And you have to pay through the nose for accessories.
The brand I am most likely to buy when I get one is JNC or iRiver.

iRiver's are fucking expensive. I'm looking at $600 for a 20g alone. (Yes, it's a colour screen and has a radio and stuff, but that's a LOT of money). :/
Oh, and I forgot, size does count. How about how big they are and stuff too? I'm mainly going to be using it at the gym, so don't want something bulky. I like how you can strap the mini's to your arm or something. Does anything else have accessories like that?

I've had my iPod (40gb) for about 6ish months now i think. The batteries in iPods diminish over time, depending on how much you decide to abuse them. They ARE replaceable, although its not easy (battery replacement is not a native feature). iPod mini's are NOT solid state. iPod shuffle's suck, no LCD screen (shuffle gimmick also sucks). If you want to listen to music, buy something from the Creative brand. iPod sound isn't up to scratch like these beauties. And for fuck sake, please spend some dosh on a DECENT pair of headphones, not the stock pieces of crap you get with said mp3 players (fuck all you ipod headphone wearing retards). I paid $110 for mine frmo JB, and have never been happier! There's these new 5gb Creative Muvo 2's at work going for $350 (Officeworks). Replaceable battery, fm tuner, awesome sound, works as portable hdd without drivers (unlike the zen touch), voice recording and what not. My recommendation. Its rather small, and I like it

Is that one you reccommend solid state boogs? Might have a look if it is. 5Gb for $350 is pretty good.

512meg ain't bad for $150 for the ipod shuffle thing. I need a pendrive, and don't really need a music thingy. But it wouldn't be a bad addition considering usb drives are about that or more expensive.

iRivers are solid-state.
iRivers (the big 20/40/60 gig ones) can also bootleg at 320kps, as opposed to the 8kps of the mini ipod as mentioned in the other thread.
Personally, I use an md, mainly because 20 gig media players weren't around when i got it, and 128mb mp3 players cost $400. My md can hold 5 albums on one disc, so i was happy with that at the time.

i have an ipod 40gb, and are basically happy with it. I've half filled it so far. Im not that wrapped about its battery life, it doesnt seem to last as long as id hoped. Apart from that, it annoys me how the backlight doesnt automatically come on when you touch the wheel because i listen to music in bed and have to fumble around looking for the backlight. Boogs is right about the headphones - absolute crappola, and a message to crims to mug you. In terms of size, its a good size, not too clunky. Heavier than i thought, but its really compact.
hmm i like it, but id like to see how creative compares.

I've got a creative Muvo, I think it holds 4Gb. Its pretty light and seems so far to be reasonably good quality. Its a good size for the gym too - about a 7 or 8 cm square. My only issue with it is the menu and LCD isnt laid out very well (or very big). I think you'll find with any portable media that the headphones that come with them are a bit dodgy. I'm happy with mine, but thats cos I mainly use it at the gym, where there's a lot of background noise.

I have an ipod mini and their pretty good. Im not sure how they compare to others because i haven't tried any others. But in regards to sound quality i was suprised that my sony walkman sucked compared to the ipod's.

I have a Creative Jukebox Zen (30g) and I havent had any trouble with it thus far. Sound's pretty decent and there are a few eq options. New headhones are a must!!!! If you listen to music really loudly then you may be a tad dissapointed cause it doesnt get really loud without distorting but certainly loud enough. I got it for about $450 from memory (on special at Bing Lee). Of course i got new headphones but other than that its great. Come with a nice leather pouch and the buttons are layed out as such so you dont have to look at it to know what you are doing. Software is nice and easy too. Ripps and downloads nice and quick. The only thing is if you want it for exercise/gym it is a little bulky (not much bigger than iPod) and weighs a bit so you wouldnt want it dangling around in your pants when you run....unless you want to know what it feels like for guys to run

Is that Creative Muvo 5Gb a solid state thing? That's pretty good for $350 AUD. The best value I've seen so far if it is.
