As much as it pains me to say this - an "opinion" cannot be wrong. Whilst a bedwetting 20 year old wandering around claiming that "Ita Buttrose" is a pot of sex is slightly deranged, and certainly someone should sit down with him and discuss the benefits of euthanasia, he isn't actually "wrong".
This episode of Sharky St was brought to you by the letter F and the number 4.

I guess it's a matter of semantics then. People with awful music taste aren't "wrong", they're just mentally deranged. Yep, makes sense. In truth, I think I do lean towards Claire and Harpoon's "whatever floats your boat" philosophy of subjectivity, but I'm reminded of a rather poetic quote from a tv show which rings true to me: "A stroke of the brush does not guarantee art from the bristles." Hmm, so it may not be all subjective. Maybe there is some level of objectiveness in art?

Claire. Hyperbole. There is no possible way to be objective about any contemporary creative arts. Then if you're creating something yourself, how do you know if what you're creating is brilliant or plain shite? How can you ever tell if there's no criteria to judge yourself by? As an example, (and I've mentioned this specific example on soundczech before when this topic came up there before) but look at the following lyrics I read in the CD booklet in an Eiffel 65 album that Britney-Spears-loving-friend bought (yes, bought). The Edge by Eiffel 65i've been to the edge and i've been to the edge. yes i've been to the edge. i've been to the edge and god know if i've looked down. looked down. i've been to the edge and i've been to the edge yes i've been to the edge. i've been to the edge and god know if i've looked down. looked down. i've been to the edgeNow are these lyrics actually "good"? If someone wrote this crap on the arts board here as a poem would you say what you thought or would you skirt around what you think and say that it depends on perspective?

but their definiton of good might be diferrent to yours. i was talking to my friend the other day who listens to 2day fm and all poppy/dancey stuff she says she listens to it for fun, for background music, something to sing along too she thinks it's good because it suits her purposes: she doesn't want to be intellectually chalenged, she doesn't want to have to think about her music, she doesn't look to music for answers to whatever questions she might have, music isn't as big in her life as some people on this board who like sfk as a 'thinking' band. i was also talking to another friend form work where i've told her in the past i like sfk, and i've worn sfk t-shirts etc, she knows i'm a fan. now she's a bit ditzy, and she comes running up to me, just to tell me that she likes monsters (which i thought was nice of her . i asked her why, and she said cause she likes the music to bop along too. nothing about lyrics or anything, she just liked the sounds. she could have said the exact same thing about a britney song (for eg) and would have thought them to be equally good. btw: scuse the spelling mistakes, couldn't be bothered fixing them

Yeah, that same friend who bought the Eiffel 65 album, he said to me that he never listens to the lyrics in songs. That's just unfathomable to me. Guess we're not the only people to have discussed this. Some interesting differing opinions on the topic here: www.metafilter.com/mefi/15234
