but already she likes concrete better than grass
that's obviously has been written about my greek grandmother, who's made my grandfather concrete the whole backyard...he's sad cause he's losing his vegetable patch.

heh really though, does that line mean this person has lost appreciation for nature or the "real" world, and is caught up in the rush for technology or industrialisation or something?

its actually about a young child, who has found out the hard way that playing on concrete is more fun than playing on grass. She grows up to be a road worker.

i'm a big fan of the echoed lines towards the end - the way 'sunshine' and then 'doing' kind of float out - such passion. i make sure to "do" these echo parts every time this song is played live. there's hope in there too, methinks.

These posts came from another thread about Pinstripe but i have moved them here because they won't be found at the end of the list of topics. "your the last day of april every year"paperboat: I live this line, it is sung with such meaning and yet I have no bloody idea what it means? Any idea?
heartspark: well, it is nicki webster's birthday?
sfkaty: No idea. You would probably have to go straight to the source for that one
The Astronaut: how do you know that Mel?
heartspark: uh... i... um.... actually, someone else said it, evan i think - i didn't find that out myself.
etc, etc, etc....: Listen to the next line- You're grey, feeling for something, anything you can't have The last day of April is 2/3 of the way through Autumn. The days start to grow short and cold. They have a strange feeling about them, they're grey, they're dull. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I put an interpretation of this song on the soundczech website when it existed so I thought I'd post it here:
This is an epic song.
The thing about this song (and most SFK songs) is that pronouns can vary in regards to whom it refers to. When he says “you”, is he referring to “you” the listener, or is he referring to a third person, or is he referring to himself? I think the right answer is all the above. I don’t think there’s any definate answer, and it all depends on how you interpret it personally.
Below is my waffling commentary for the song lyrics:
“there is no need to throw your arms around”
There’s nothing to worry about. No need to panic.
“and there is no need to ask unless there is some doubt”
Unless, something is wrong?
“if you are comfortable with two feet on the ground you don't need wings now (x2)”
If life is fine and you’re happy, then great, don’t worry, you don’t need to ask questions about yourself and your place in the world. That’s only if things are fine and if you’re comfortable.
“have you set down your course or are you out of control, my dear?”
But is something wrong?
”are you accidentally part of some involuntary movement here?”
Have things not gone exactly to plan, and now you’re not sure what to do now?
”we thought we knew it so well we could do it with our arms tied behind our backs and our eyes shut tight I thought I knew it so well I could stop”
We thought we had a grip on things that we could take control and be fine.
“so I stopped and we can't start again”
But it’s not that easy. We’ve lost our footing and we’re finding it’s not so easy to pick ourselves up and make things right again.
“stand under the hole in your roof”
So stand under your roof, the metaphor for your shelter and security, and stand under it even though it has a hole in it and is making you vulnerable and uncertain.
“let the rain come in and fall down on your head”
And let the rain, the metaphor for all your problems and difficulties, let it engulf you, let it fall down on you and hit you in your face.
“it's a simple joy you can bring upon yourself”
Because you don’t care now. You can make yourself happy by embracing what’s been holding you back. By facing your problems (your rain) you may be able to make yourself happier. So let the rain fall on you untill you’re soaking wet.
”it's a simple something new, something else”
And you just might find something new, something else that you hadn’t found before.
”trees stand in a perfect line trees stand at attention”
So don’t be like the trees that grow in a perfect line, standing to attention in a militaristic formation.
”not much time has passed but already she likes concrete better than grass”
And that girl that I was interested in, that I thought I might end up being more than friends with, who I thought was a kindred. It’s not to be. She prefers the absolutes in life and the concrete of the city in her corner office. Whereas, I prefer the grass, nature, and the possibilities in life.
“and i don't think we'll last”
So I don’t think we’ll ever be what I hoped we’d be. We’re too different. I know that now.
“so i stare up at the sky and it hurts my eyes”
So I look up at the sky in a quiet desperation, hoping to see something in the heavens that I missed before. But the sun only burns.
”maybe i'll go blind”
Maybe it’ll blind me. Maybe by looking at the sun , a metaphor for what’s difficult in my life, and what I’ve been too afraid to look at in case it does blind me or hurt me… maybe by looking at it and attacking it head on…
”maybe all i'll see is, all i'll see is sunshine sunshine (x2)”
I’ll be free. I’ll see the sunshine, I’ll be content. All because I was brave enough to look at what was holding me back.
“just trying to sound”
I’m just trying to make sense of it all, to express myself.
“i'm not trying to sound i don't wanna sound like this”
But I don’t want to sound pretentious.
“you're the last day of April every year you're grey, feeling for something anything, you can't have oversize, owning the road pulled by a current, tossed over in the wind you focus your sights and try to stare up at the sky”
But towards the end of April every year when it’s cold, I’m depressed. I’m realising where I actually am in life and it gets me down. I breakdown and fall to the floor, but then I realise that I have to do something, so I stare at sky and face my problems and what I’ve been afraid of.
“and it hurts your eyes maybe you'll go blind”
It’s not easy though, and I fear that I’ll lose myself in the process.
“or maybe all you'll see is, all you'll see is sunshine sunshine”
But maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll achieve something better.
“walk in a straight line”
So walk the straight line in your life and try and achieve what you want.
“you waste energy in the daytime”
But sometimes you can’t help stuffing up, and you waste time. Sometimes you’re stuck in rut and not sure how to proceed and advance yourself to where you want to be.
“you know exactly what you're doing, doing sometimes (x2)”
And sometimes you only know what you’re really doing half the time. The other half of the time you’re running in circles and falling behind. However, if you’re brave enough to break through the barriers that hold you back, despite how terrifying it may be, you'll get what you want.
Okay, waffling over. In short, the song is about being a rut in life and having the courage to pull yourself out, overcome your fears and find something better. Pinstripe could possibly be the foundations for other SFK songs like whatever you want, stunt show, Jerry stand up, monsters, and twenty years (actually a fair bit of Echolalia).
Oh well, just some stream-of-consciousness thoughts from me. I hope it made sense.
