When Phillips started his first encore he was joined on stage by Dempsey. The material was mostly covers of REM and David Bowie. This is an extract from someone's post on the GLP official message board (by someone named Chris) "The headlining act of his tour, Paul Dempsey, generously performed alongside Grant which was excellent. The gesture helped equate the calibre of each artist as Paul assumed the "backup" role for the main act, Grant Lee Phillips. First song performed on the first encore with Paul was Paul's song, 'Stuntshow'. This contained Eric doing the voilin bits which was awesome as Eric wouldn't have been exposed to Paul's music for very long, and managed to do a great take for the one and only performance of this song. Grant played guitar and ...tried to... sing relevent parts, which ended up only being abit of mouthing the lyrics which was obvious he was trying to overcome his lack of recollection just like someone trying to mouth the national anthem who doesn't know what the words are exactly. He did sing two lines of the song out loud though, the obvious ones. "How will you get yourself out of this one, you stand by watching this is how your life is turning out", to which he mistakenly sang "stand there watching" with Paul singing his correct words, making Grant feel he needs to take a step back and let Paul do all the vocal work. Each performer loves REM (I think PD is the bigest REM fan in history) and happily gave 'The One I Love' a crack. It turned out very well, again kudos to Eric for picking up on it so well, but Paul assumed the lead with the more aggressive vocals, and Grant with great backup vocals/oohs n' ahhhs for the chorus. Paul played guitar only during The Hook, leaving Grant to do what he does best on his own, likewise with Ashes to Ashes, with Paul just singing a short burst of leads during half the second verse and backing vocals on the following chorus. Then he was outta there." Setlist for the night: See America Spring Released Sing Along Love's A Mystery Demon Called Deception Mighty Joe Moon Honey Don't Think Mockingbirds Mobilize We All Get A Taste It's The Life Stars n Stripes Happiness Lone Star Song ----------- Stunt Show (Something For Kate) w/ Paul Dempsey One I Love (REM) w/ Paul Dempsey The Hook w/ Paul Dempsey Ashes To Ashes (David Bowie) w/ Paul Dempsey The Shining Hour Fuzzy ----------- Jupiter & Teardrop ----------- Truly, Truly Humankind Heavenly Now I wish I had been to that show.
