Hi there, I’m new here and in my search through the archives of this forum I have found something that I want to speak up about. One thing you all should know is that I do play guitar and I’m looking at this from a musical perspective.
I have noticed that there is a thread here that says Pete Murray and SFK would be great if they both played at the same gig. I have to disagree with this one boys and girls. I don’t think that it is a good combo at all.
The difference between Pete and Paul is something to marvel at.
Although, being the stoner I am, and how much I love to play, artists (if you can call them that) like Pete Murray and Jack Johnson don’t do that much for me.
I find their musicality almost mundane. I learnt to play ‘So beautiful’ from Pete in about 3 seconds.
Lyrically they don’t cut it either, they are both just stoner boys from the beach who play guitar and know people in the industry. Not that I really have a problem with it, because I have both the albums and if that is where they want to be, then good on them.
The essence of my post here is to identify the difference between ‘expression’ and ‘art’. Pete and Jack, they play well, it is accurate and controlled playing, and they can certainly show there personal expression – eg\ Pete will always sound like Pete and Jack will always sound like Jack. You will be able to pick a song of theirs on the radio, even if you didn’t know it.
But then there is ‘art’ which is where I see SFK. Not only do they have expression so they always sound like themselves, but they have shaped and worked that expression into a place where no one else is.
Hence – this is art. The Humanity that shows right through every time, the sweetness that is in there, and the musical expression that is used to signify it.
I guess the basic way to put it, is that Paul and SFK don’t just strum a major chord in a particular pattern up and down the fret board. There is sound for purpose.
I would love to know what anyone else has to say about this………<br>
