On the inset of every White Pages telephone book in Australia is a listing of emergency numbers. These are 24 hour numbers for people in crisis - poison information centre, alcohol and drug councelling, and the 000 of ambulance, fire and police. And there is also the number for Pregnancy Counselling Australia. At first glance, the number looks like a progressive step forward – a 24 hour service for women on the issue of pregnancy. Unfortunately, the site is run by Right to Life Australia. You can read more about it at the website below, and the link below that is to sign the online petition asking for the number to be removed home.iprimus.com.au/wired11/dnbq/issue1/pastissue1.htm#warningwww.gopetition.com/online/3945.html

Personally I think that everyone has the right to express the opinion... as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of another person. So I don't think signing a petition is a step in the right direction because although I don't agree with Pro-Lifers entirely, I think there should at least be SOME option there for women to ring. Again it's all about choice - you can't force a woman to have an abortion, and you shouldn't deny a woman the choice of having one, so why should we remove their choice to counselling, albeit a pro-life one? This isn't a personal dig at you, Jules, just a personal opinion. This is not a call of support for pro-lifers if I have given anyone that impression... I work for amnesty international and am strongly committed to getting other people's hands of a woman's body. Go team equal rights!

I think the problem is that the number in the front of the phone book is made to appear as a general pregnancy counselling hotline, when it is infact a prolife number so you are going to ring it expecting a neutral point of view and instead only hear one side. People should be able to get a neutral opinion that is not biased one way or the other and not be taken advantage of when they are in a vunerable state. The petition isn't requesting the removal of the number altogether, just that the number listed is one from a neutral unbiased party
