Melbourne celebrated its biggest night last night with the opening of the 2006 Comm Games. With many magical moments amazing both people inside the MCG and those watching it along the yarra.
I end up heading towards the yarra last night in a last minute decision, not knowing how many people would be on the yarra. And after walking around for an hour trying to find a good spot, a group of us settled not far from the skate park.
The fish! I love the fish, i wish they would bring em out ever NYE - theage.com.au/ftimages/2006/03/16/1142098564579.h . I have walked along the yarra a few times in the past week trying to get a sneak peak into whats happening, and i must say I was surprised at the effort Melbourne City Council and the games organizes has gone to bring the City alive. Even Ron Barassi walking on water was a great sensational.
I feel sorry for anyone trying to get home by public transport. Flinders street station is no where fit enough to cope with such a vast amount of communities. Friday peak hour stretches the station to the limit let alone special events. It's a shame that Spencer street isnt closer to Fed Square - im curious how Spencer would hold up.
Sadly, I had to admit i felt lost and nude last night without my digital camera. My camera was damaged on a recent trip to the gold coast and I was dieing to take some shots last night of the fireworks and the yarra. I hope to get it back in time for the closing ceremony.
What's with the duck? I personally enjoyed the duck / boy story line and i believe the symbolism is 'anything is possible'. The church played an amazing rendition of "Under The Milky Way". I'm not a delta fan and was disappointed that someone from Victoria / Melbourne did not finish the night off. IMO she is turning into a pommy, and I don't believe she should have played a part last night. Someone who has been apart of Melbourne's music scene for years should have been gifted that part (open to suggestion). I would have love to see John Farnham in the ceremony. A True Australian Icon.
Did anyone else go to the yarra / mcg?
What were your thoughts?
Did Melbourne out do Sydney Opening ceremony?
Also – does anyone know of some streaming videos or even possibly Bit Torrents of the opening games?
