Okay. About 2 of my friends like Something For Kate but everyone else tells me there music is to depressing? I don’t see it? I know most of their music is slow and stuff but the words aren’t depressing.
What are your thoughts on the matter…?

Yeah this has always annoyed me as well, i don't find sfk music depressing. i also really like sarah mclachlan and some people think she is so depressing but her music to me at all it and sfk music has helped me in the past and has NEVER made me depressed.

when people (including about 80% of my friends ) make a statement that SFK are depressing i then know why radio staions like 2day fm are so popular, becuse there are a lot of ignorant people out there who are only interested in a catchy tune and really don't care where it came form or what it stands for.

Conversely, I find the disposable, generic crap on radio stations like 2DayFM depressing. it depressed me that people are so prone to marketing machines and musical work that is methodically written and released to hit a certain demographic.

i think that people find sfk "depressing" because its the first music they've heard that has made them think about thigns outside their world. and while i'm here, depressing is the most over used word, people don't know what they mean when they say their depressed, they're over-exagerating, they should get there facts right before throwing around words like that

"Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm." ^ A quote that I come across heaps.
I think heaps of people just use depression as an excuse...but then there are people who genuinely get depressed and people dismiss them and they feel worse...Life is a horrible bitch....I think Britney Spears depresses more people than SFK ever will.

But do you think people actually even really listen to the lyrics of sfk and many other non-commercially acceptible bands. Most top 40 rock is always about a girl/breaking up/cheating, but its just that the music is uptempo, and has a singalong chorus (nothing too deep of course). If people actually did listen to the words of pd, then i would find it hard to believe that they would feel depressed. The first time i heard them it was like a breath of fresh air, like finally someone was speaking the truth.
Like without words was saying, i think the english language has been cheapened. Words like great and awesome are bandied around when used to describe the most mundane things in life. Same with sad and depressed. Society piles praise on insignificant things, but takes for granted everything we have.

This is like an argument i have been having with some friends of mine for a long time, is music art, or purely entertainment.
Most people listen to music for asthetic quality, a good boppy tune that you can dance too, i hate music like that. For me music is the biggest part of my like, i play a few instruments and am also an audio engineer. Music is about personal expression, so if a song makes you 'depressed' or makes you feel sad then its good music, it has portrayed the emotion that the writer was feeling, like poetry. The writer can express themselvs in the lyrics but also the music.
I like bands that you guys wont have heard or, ie Dream Theater? These guys are amazing Progressive Metal, sort of like the next generation of Rush, ELP, Genesis and Pink Floyd.
Music should not be about making money of 2day radio, its much deeper than that. What saddens me is that alot of the insudtry only see it as a money making venture and take music on its dance factor, a few weeks ago heard the head music critic of Time Magazine say that music should not be deeply looked into for any type of meaning, that is exactly what i think music should be looked into like...
yeah sorry for that, but some songs are good for when you are feeling down, so in a way they are depressing, but not all, and not most.
