Band: Death Cab for Cutie
Date: 14 July 2006
Venue: The Forum Theatre, Melbourne
I might as well just put it out there. I'm an unashamedly obsessed Death Cab for Cutie fan. Monica and I lined up at 6:30 for a 7:45 doors open. We befriended these guys who were underage but were, like totally cool!... nah they were great and we managed to pull front row spots in front of where the singer would be. The supporting band made it out onto stage and were actually quite decent, some nice rock tunes, but not quite suited for the audience. Didn't quite catch the name, which was a pity.
9:15 saw the band come out on stage and it was just heaven. They opened with Marching Bands of Manhattan, followed very quickly by The New Year, the opening tracks on the two latest albums. Fantastic. Crowd loved it. The setlist was a really great mix of stuff off nearly every album.
Death cab aren't a really "rocky" band but they sure did rock out - the light show, Ben Gibbards antics with his side-swaying dance and drumsticks and electric drum pad made the show all the more enjoyable. The sound was great in general, but was overwhelmed by a bit too much bass in some songs.
The setlist was done very well, with the crowd warming poppier songs at the front, some old material in the middle, a great improv followed by a pop song to finish the first set. What sarah said, a nice piano ballady kinda thing was one of the best moments - where the entire band pauses, and there was not a single noise in the theatre, waiting for the next lyric
The encore was amazing. Nothing else can describe it. Solo acoustic, Ben came out and played I will follow you into the dark. Another old song followed, but they saved the best til last - the title track of their second last album - Transatlanticism. Beautiful. The lights were bedazzling, the sound was intense but suited the repeated "I need you so much closer" sung by the entire crowd.
Highlights: Front row, meeting some crazy underagers, as well as some people we had stood next to at Something For Kate, the setlist (Title and Registration, The New Year, We Laugh Indoors, What Sarah Said, We Looked Like Giants, Transatlanticism), meeting the guitarist afterwards and getting him to sign my poster and getting a photo taken (like I said earlier - obsessed).
Lowlights: Some girl kept trying to push between Monica and myself to try and get into the front row, too much bass in some of the songs, and finally - emos EVERYWHERE... except front row which was fine by me.
Setlist:
Marching Bands of Manhattan
The New Year
We Laugh Indoors
Title and Registration
Soul Meets Body
Crooked Teeth
Photobooth
Company Calls
?
What Sarah Said
Your Heart is an Empty Room
A Movie Script Ending

Rating: 8/10 - Go and get yourself some death cab cds.
