I'll probably get flamed for this, but, who do you like better as a bass player? Steph or good old Julz. I think Julian crapped all over Steph.

I've only been following sfk since beautiful sharks so I don't know any better... therefore, steph.

i dunno. i don't really pay attention to the specific parts, like "oh look, this is stephs bass bit" or whatever. i just listen to the music. but, steph is hotter, therefore my vote goes with steph.

That's pretty much why I'm saying Steph. I'm sure both Julien and Steph are good bassists, but there was too much testosterone in Something For Kate before Steph came along.

Paul uses a lot of interesting chords, but his solos and other lead figures are pretty disinteresting. His picking/singing co-ordination is also pretty damn good. Steph isn't anything special, at least Julian had some creativity.

I don't really pay much attention to bass...but the only song that really listen for the bass because I love it is in Seasick...and Steph did that. So I say Steph.

Steph just happens to have one of the best bass sounds I've ever heard. I think elsewhere has one of the crappest bass sounds ever recorded to cd!
She can't slap and show off will all that fancy pointless crap, but it doesn't mean she isn't good. The notes shes plays sound great with Paul's chords and they are always something weird or different making this cool dissonance. I also love the rhythms she puts underneath Paul's rhythms ...
Most bass players just play single root notes of the chords.

Oh, and what about the bass bit in Seasick? At the start how there is the sliding part - very simple but it sounds great! Then it goes to next part which she strums normally and it really moves the song along ...
And the part she plays in the chorus of Monsters! That pretty much makes that chorus. If you listen to the demo version with a different bass line in the chorus the song lacks without it.

Hello, I'm stupid. Wow, a bass slide here, a bass slide there and suddenly she's a genius. And, for your information, she does play root notes most of the time. The fill in the chorus of monsters sounds exactly like the fill in Jerry stand up. Mmm..smell the creativity. We have a word for this in the bass players league. 'Shit'. Julian was a much more interesting bass player. Listen to the break downs in prick and anarchitect. Not to mention the basslines from intermission, etc.

Actually, I have to agree with you. Steph does look nicer on stage (damn Julian's VB hat) and her bassline to Electricity is by far her greatest work.
