*hyperventilates...*
No no. Transformers was mucho different to Voltron. You see Voltron was just a typical Japanese cartoon with robots that combined into a larger robot. Granted Transformers borrowed this idea with some of their themed sets (like the Destructicons, Constructicons, Predicons, Protectorbots, Techobots etc etc) but there was a stronger sense of storytelling and character in the Tranformer world. With the Autobots, you had the leader of the Autobots the wise and noble Optimus Prime, the humble and brave little Bumblebee, the fearless but mentally disturbed Grimlock and his team of Dinobots, the rocking Blaster who turned into a cassette player (!), and the adolescent Hot Rod. Among the Decepticons, you had Megatron the nazi-like tyrant, the creepy and laconic Soundwave who like Blaster turned into a cassette player (!) with mini tapes, the alien looking logician Shockwave, and the scheming and envious Starscream who always wanted to replace Megatron.
As far as toys go, they were very inventive. Some of them changed from robots to vehicles, but others changed to cassette players and tapes, microscopes, cameras, animals, and other things.
Also, the show had affirmative action in the 80s by featuring robots from minority groups in lead roles. For example Jazz the black robot with his clichéd black speak and Arcee the only female transformer. In retrospect, these two characters probably weren't so great in retrospect since it raises questions as to why one transformer spoke with a clichéd black accent and why another one was female. Why would robots need a gender? And if they do have different genders then why is only one female shown? Then again, you could ask the same question of The Smurfs.

although it's not really my judgement to make, on the sheer merit of your dedication and saddishly in depth knowledge of the characters and their transformations and the toys, as well as the socio-political issues raised by the cartoon, you may win this debate regarding voltron vs. transformers. ;D

Well that was a backhanded compliment Caelestis. But yes, I did some 15-minute google research for my last response. It was an interesting trip down memory lane. Seriously though, one day school children will have to answer the following questions in their final exam paper: " Discuss with examples why Transformers: The Movie was a classic moment in cinema history." Or " Starscreamer's envy was his undoing. Give your opinion on this statement with relevant examples to support your argument."
