not unlike nirvana... maybe theres a good reason that all the bands that sound like nirvana are really bad...... its because they have achieved it so well just like all these serious metal acts that end up sounding like same tool album over and over again....

Having an influence (or influences) is one thing. I was listening to some Fugazi the other day and was remembering how Paul said they were influence for him. I could hear the somethingforkateness in some of the Fugazi guitar work and could see how it was an influence for Paul. And that's not a bad thing. Something For Kate's music may be influenced by Fugazi but it's not a copy, and that's what the question is. It’s just, where do you draw the line between being influenced and blanket plagiarism? Silverchair in their early days did look and sound a little like Nirvana jr (as people said back then too), but I'd say that these days Silverchair (for better or worse) have established their own sound and style different to Nirvana.

Yes i agree with you Katy, finding a band like that however, is rare, but bands like kyuss, qotsa and tool break the mould. I dont like it, but most avenues of music have been tapped, its a lot harder to create something new these days. And as for eddievedders comment on metal bands repeating tool albums, thats bloody difficult, cos they have a style all of their own *points to avatar of adam jones*

The most diverse AND original musical act that I can think of from within the last decade is of course: FAITH NO MORE.
You could have a directory the size of a phone book listing all of the music styles which they dipped into in their almost 20 years together - each of which they dud well.
I know most of you will know the band from their 1990 single "epic", but I found their later work to be much more pioneering - songs such as "Just a Man", "Jizzlobber", "Naked in front of the Computer", and "Strip Search".
Nooch.

I found that Ashes to Ashes was the song that I first experienced from this band, and up until last year, I hadn't heard it for nearly 3-4 years. Theyre quite a good band, I should put some effort into their music.
If i were to say any band which I feel would be a great musical influence, it would either go to Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. Page and Plant did some amazing work together, especially with the Middle-Eastern efforts of No Quarter, which is an amazing CD. Pink Floyd, however, changed music over their decades of performing, with oddities from Colonel Clegg to Keep talking ( my fave PF song). Syd Barrett....what a man! Went insane due to drugs, his songs are so strange. My friend Steven ( a huge PF fan) and I leeched off Kazaa some of Syd's songs - effervescent elephant, birdie hop, what a shame mary jane and scream thy lasy scream.
