what the hell is emo anyway?
This is a reply to the above comment, a defense of emo (If you haven't listened to something from each group, be careful before you jump on the anti-emo bandwagon because there could easily be something you like), and an emo listening list for those who are curious.
Also, Kim, I hope you can accept that I no longer call you a friend for not pointing this thread out to me earlier. You have now earned the title 'scum sucking not tell about threadser' =PWhat is Emo?This is all questionable, because no-one really knows how it started. However, the version I've heard most often is:
Emo evolved out of the super masculine hardcore bands like Black Flag, etc. Originally, this new branch was dubbed 'emocore'. The idea of it was that these were bands that were just as tough as hardcore bands, but weren't afraid to admit that they have feelings.
Since then, it's evolved and branched out into different areas. The most emo band that's around these days, IMHO, is The Alkaline Trio (with lyrics like 'I shat the bed and laid there in it, thinking of you, wide awake, for days' and 'emma fell like rain into my lap like a heart attack'). These guys are really worth checking out no matter what your musical leaning is. Seriously.
You could call some bands like Sebadoh and Fugazi Emo in the original sense. But this is more on a song by song basis as they're notoriously unpredictable.
There's a brand of emo-ish bands that are more about being thought provoking than emo. Among these are:
Death Cab for Cutie,
Sunny Day Real Estate,
Rainer Maria
(and that will do because these three are incredibly fantastic and you don't need more)
Other branches have gone the (rather shiteful) branch into what can only be termed as pop-punk. They're no less commercial than Avril. Among these are:
good charlotte,
the ataris (did the terrible cover of boys of summer).
Don't bother with any emo that gets airplay on MMM or beyond. It's like hating old school R&B because you've heard Destiny's Child. Others of this type that you may or may not have heard of are:
The Juliana Theory (soppy, flat lyrics, but some okay tunes),
ThinkTank (could be great, aren't yet),
Jets to Brazil (ohmigod could you be soppier? I thought they were joking off the first few songs I heard).
There are some bands that are sound similar to the above ones, but are much less manufactured, and actually have some half-decent lyrics. This is my kind of emo, for the most part. Good bands in this category are:
Taking Back Sunday (driving tunes, lots of catharsis),
Brand New (very cute tunes and less cathartic, for the most part),
Saves the Day (very very fun in a weezer kind of way),
The Starting Line (if you can find their cover of J-Lo's I'm Real, I strongly recommend the download)
Seville (I haven't heard much, but slower than most other emo),
Keepsake (when they're good they're awesome, when they're not, they're a black hole of suck)
Snow Patrol (who hit this branch of emo sometimes),
Rival Schools (not so emo on the lyrics, but very Emo on the sound),
The Cooper Temple Clause (barely Emo on the sound, very on the lyrics),
Far (ditto).
Then there are branches of emo that aren't really emo, but they get lumped into the genre for their attitude. Some of these are:
Bright Eyes (folk, Conor is my saviour)
Dashboard Confessional (acoustic emo, I guess. Can be impossibly soppy, but worth checking out nonetheless),
The Black Heart Procession (100% indie, but so impossibly sad it hurts in all of the right ways),
Broken Social Scene (again, indie, but has emo moments),
Damien Rice (folk / acoustic, but sweet in a very modern emo way),
Onelinedrawing (ditto),
Idlewild (kind of a rock version of emo over the usual punk inspired emo).
AFI (I hate hate hate them, but they are a softcore metal version of emo, and you should check them out if you are checking out emo bands. You might like them).
If you like AFI, I suggest checking out the screamo evolution of emo, but I flatly refuse to recommend screamo bands because I can't stand the very existence of the genre.
Emo is varied as all hell. Anyone who wants an emo crash course, message me and I'll send a mix CD if I get a mix CD of some description back.
