Canadians are fucking great, Michael Patton, who doesn't really fit into this post topic because he couldn't play a guitar if his life depended on it, but who the fuck cares he is one of the 20th Century's greatest frontmen(still is now). Well yeah he is from Canada originally.
Hands up if you were raised on "You can't do that on television" and "Degrassi"

Paul, the best guitarist ever...? Not even funny! Even two of my friends are ten times better than Paul. I could compete with a bit of practice. None of the members in SFK are great musicians technically (Clint reminds me of Animal from the Muppet Show, but not Keith Moon ), but they do a good job of creating a mood, and "telling" their songs. You don't need to be too technically gifted to do that.

I am not the greatest judge on musicians - but the guy in the Waifs...for the life of me I can't remember his name!
His guitar work on some/most of their tracks is fan-fucking-tastic. Always sounds so full and I enjoy it.
Well that's my opinion.

personally i don't like stevie ray, steve vai, yngwie malmsteem, tommy iomi and eddie van halen and all of them, my favourite, and the person who i think is close to the best guitarist ever, if not he is definitely very under-rated is mr mike mccready of pearl jam.
his solos, whilst many criticise him for mainly using only pentatonic scales, just grab me sooo much more than any of those other guys. as fast as they all might be able to run, hammer-on, pull-off or finger tap their way through a scale doesn't mean anything to me, i think a lot of it is lifeless and actually sounds sooo bad it's funny (notably van halen's 'eruption'). McCready solo seriously make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, he puts so much into them and they are never identical, and that's what keeps him playing night after night.
paul is incredibly talented, but as a rhythm guitarist, he doens't really play lead, only random fills, mainly seeing how he's the only guitarist.
ps - i know the tragically hip! only cos i know canadians hehe

I dont think that we, fans of paul should be so analytical of paul all the time... what i see as a good guitarist and what you see are often two different things, how can you compare paul to eddie va halen for example? come on....get with the program, paul is great at what he does and i wouldnt change im in any way. and for those guitarists who want to criticise...try and play all the chords that he can play....you probably cant...even though is hands are much bigger than most of our hands.

There is no best guitarist. There are so many players out there doing so many different things that to label one person the best is pointless. Try to get something good out of every guitarist ( or for that point any song) you hear, even if that good thing is learning what not to play in a given situation.

being able to play the hardest riffs and chords and things like that shouldnt matter, in the end to a musician. yes being technically proficient is something worth striving for and good for practise, but for writing songs, sometimes its not the best, you cannot compare dempsey to hendrix because they play different styles of music. paul plays ballads, soft rock and pushing onto rock hardly ever using a distortion pedal and using his fingers and guitar instead, while hendrix plays on the harder end of rock great sound, and uses effects and everything to enhance his music
in the end a guitarist who writes songs that are good, catchy and meaningful, even tho they arent the hardest songs to paly, i.e. truly or seasick, or smoke on the water by deep purple, all are great songs, loved by their fans but when u get round to it, they arent that hard songs. if music was judged on how hard it is to play, then why isnt classical and jazz music at the top of the charts? coming from both perspectives as i play rock guitar, and classical violin and piano, im not saying rock music isnt hard, just not as technically involving and skillful as other genre's.
just because u aint a fantastic guitarist/pianist/bassist/drummer doesnt mean you cant write bloody good catchy songs.... haha look at semi-charmed life by third eyed blind, bloody catchy tune, instant hit, and it only used a GRAND TOTAL OF.... wait for it.... THREE CHORDS. point proven, Dan 1, everyone else.... aww u can all have some points hehehe

I have been disturbed by a topic on the main site. There was some voting on whther Paul Dempsey is the greatest guitarist ever. I was even more disturbed when such a large percentage thought he was. I understand that the concept that music from other eras might be good is hard, but Jimmy Hendrix was a freak. Although we might not like the music it is undeniable that he was brilliant. Playing two completely different patterns with the same hand or playing fluently with his teeth is no mean feat. Hendrix played with such flair and was excited just to play the next riff, he would lock himself in his room for eight hours a day to practice. Paul Dempsey is a good guitarist, very good as far as creativity, but he is not a Hendrix. I dont intend on offending anyone and you are entitled to your own opinions but its just so bizarre (to me) that nobody understands that. Ermm, everybody knows that the greatest musician of all time is Tommy Emmanuel

Stupid argument. This is just like saying, what's better, PS2, Xbox or Gamecube? Myself, I have a Gamecube and an Xbox cos i prefer certain titles. Same with music. I prefer SFK/Foo's/Placebo/etc.. cos they play the music I like.
It's not which is BETTER, its which you PREFER. There's no doubt that most guitarists have some feasible amount of skill.

I'm not gonna weigh in to the whole Guitar debate. I tend to get over-animated and I think I should watch my blood pressure........................
