I have been disturbed by a topic on the main site. There was some voting on whther Paul Dempsey is the greatest guitarist ever. I was even more disturbed when such a large percentage thought he was. I understand that the concept that music from other eras might be good is hard, but Jimmy Hendrix was a freak. Although we might not like the music it is undeniable that he was brilliant. Playing two completely different patterns with the same hand or playing fluently with his teeth is no mean feat. Hendrix played with such flair and was excited just to play the next riff, he would lock himself in his room for eight hours a day to practice. Paul Dempsey is a good guitarist, very good as far as creativity, but he is not a Hendrix. I dont intend on offending anyone and you are entitled to your own opinions but its just so bizarre (to me) that nobody understands that.

yes, Paul Dempsey has a great talent with the guitar, but yes, there are other guitarists who are undoubtledly brilliant. hendrix was a prime example, and another, jimmy page of led zeppelin. playing double guitars, including using violin sticks...

No sorry guys. Paully is good......but he is definately not the best. I respect his playing because he is very skilled at Singing and Playing complicated parts at the same time..

I hafta nominate Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac
As evidence, I offer Big Love, from The Dance...astonishingly fast fingerpicking...no other instrumental accompaniment, AND he's singing over the top of it
The man's incredible

have to agree... Paul is awesome, the chords he uses and the riffs he writes are just so cool and he has a gift of playing something relatively simple and making it sound brilliant, but isn't the worlds best. In terms of skill he is still heaps good but people like Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, Yngvie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are just nuts and make guitar their life, they talk through their guitar where Paul mainly communicates with his voice and the quality of his lyrics while his guitar accompanies. As an entertainer, performer and lyricist, Paul would be one of the best, but you can't compare his guitar playing ability only as he is so much more then a guitar player....

i think a better way of putting it rather than being the best guitarist ever is to say is he the best complete package in australia. Going by guitar ability alone, there are far better guitarists but as for a whole of guitar ability, songwriting, and vocal id think he is the best in australia. The only challenging one in my opinion is tim rogers, maybe glenn richards but i dont think he creates much impact solo.

maybe glenn richards but i dont think he creates much impact solo. 'Boring as a mofo' would be an apt description I think Paul or Misser Rogers could be contenders for best frontman...definitely both have the stage presence for it

McCormack rocks... the Titanics are awesome live. I saw them supporting They Might Be Giants. They did Chito and Set The Controls, and that was brilliant. But they were best when McCormack covered Dirty Jeans by Magic Dirt, that was hilarious.
Actually, if you want a wicked guitarist, you can't go past John Flansburgh of TMBG. Again, not the world's greatest, but he does some great stuff, as does Linnell.

I think Jimmy Page or Tony Iommi would duly share this title.
As far as Australian music goes, I really like Matt Handley from Pollyanna, as well as Tim Rogers.
