Who are the bands that you were excited to see live but were totally bored to death by? Mine are: Garbage (BDO 2002) - Thought that a band that big would have to be good live, but watching them was the most excrutiating 45 minutes of my life. The sound was far too polished to be rock, it was like listening to a cd, there was absoloutely no passion or feeling evident in their performance. What was worse was being surrounded by a dozen goth lesbians who were swooning over shirley. Jon Butler Trio (five till midnight festival, 2001) - Incredibly overrated, yes they have some good songs but in my opinion all the hype that surrounds these guys has gone to their heads a little. Every song had long self indulgent solo's when it was really not needed. What was worse was the crowd mindlessly cheering for no particular reason during the songs, at one stage JB was getting cheers and applause for picking up a bongo. I think its good that these guys have very strong political and social messages but i think that this has covered over the fact that they aren't that good. Spiderbait - The first time i saw them i thought they were ok but after a while was a little repetitive. I have seen them three times now and i really can't discern one of their gigs from another. Dull. Of course none of this can be said about everyones fave band sfk

i saw garbage at the bold coast BDO this year, and goddamnit, that was one of the best live performances i've ever seen. i was screaming along to every song, and moshing like a madman. i wasn't exactly paying attention to sound quality, i was just really into it. i think garbage do fucking awesome live performances. (and shirley is hot, oy. ) i can't really think of bad live performances i've seen, since i don't get to go to many living in darwin and all, so when i do see anyone, i appreciate so much more.

Alex Llyod - I'm sure i have ranted about this already so i will keep it short. He had a live band but they tweaked the drums so they sounded like a drum machine - he they played against a backing tape which had far too many effects and backup vocals - it sounded way too much like the CD. I thought he could've tried to emmulate some of the noises on his guitar and it would've sounded way cool.
Garbage - i saw them god knows how long ago but it was just after they released the self-titled album [the one with the pink boa on the front] and they were great. They made all the noises on the guitars and only had minimal backup with the computer noises. I saw them on TV playing something live recently and i had to say it looking pretty boring and sounded dull. But you can't really expect them to sound like a rock band anymore i guess since the music has drifted more towards the techno side of things.

Alex Lloyd-wasn't necessarily bad on his behalf, I just don't think his stuff really translated live, for me. I've seen his at Homebake twice I think, and I didn't stay for the full set, either times.
Matchbox 20-Didn't like this band in the first place, so the fact that they played like complete shit certainly didn't help. Nor did the very testy audience, who shushed us every time we made a sound. Booooo!
Have to disagree with junk bond trader about John Butler Trio-I saw them at Homebake last year, and thought they were one of the highlights of the day! ;D Oh well-each to their own.

Exactly orange sherbert, everyone has their own opinions about bands and i wasn't out to change anyones opinions or musical tastes. Was just interested to see what other people have experienced. in the last 18 months since moving away from Darwin i have loved seeing lots of live music here in the Gold Coast and Brissie and it just surprises me that sometimes the bands that have so much hype surrounding them can't deliver the goods, whereas unsigned bands can put on a brilliant performance. Or maybe i have just seen bands on a bad day, i certainly don't envy musicians who tour constantly and have to "perform" every night. As for Alex Lloyd, the first time i saw him he was absolutely amazing mainly cos his computers stuffed up and he had to play without them. So it was cool seeing him improvise a bit and dispense with all the techno stuff, if anything he had a fuller sound with out the computers cos i think for him it sounds a bit cheap and tacky. The second time i saw him i left half way through.

Yes really; last time I saw these guys live I was let down a bit. It's not that they were bad, just kind of ordinary. Could have been a number of things; the crowd wasn't great, and I was miles away...but anyway.
I've been trying to think of another one all day, but there hasn't been any lately. Any bands that were crap were ones that I didn't have any expectation of, so they weren't disappointing.

i have to agree with you on that one. i saw them for the first time at the gold coast bdo in january. maybe it was just the atmosphere and the fact that i could barely make out paul despite being in the second row, but it just wasn't what i had been looking forawrd to for the previous 3 years. granted it was a big day out, i guess i just couldn't get into it as much. it was good, but nothing like i'd hope for. if i'd seen them at their own gig, i'm sure it would've been different, but beggers can't be choosers. that and they played captain, electricity, dreamworld, and then everything off echolalia. i was expecting one rarity, or truly, or anything. ah well.

The last time I saw JBT I thought they were pretty good...however the chemicals I was also injesting may have altered my perceptions somewhat! and SFK were really good at the fly by night's last year last crap show would have to be one dollar short...could be the chemicals again though...

I thought of another one: Incubus
Didn't sound half as good as i expected/anticipated and i don't think i have ever been in a crowd full of so many teeny boppers and posers.
It was also kind of gay when Brandon was prancing around with his shirt of and walking close to the audience so all the 12 year old girls would scream their lungs out. That lowered my respect for him somewhat.

I still haven't heard Captain live, so there you go I can't really think of any show that's disappointed me, to be honest, which is a good thing, I think Oh, 28 Days' set at Push On sucked...but that was only due to Jay's voice being shot to shit

Heehee, find me one person at that show (With the exception of moi) who actually *did* want to see them Amy But the Lash argument has been done to death here...and I have lost it each time, so no point resurrecting it ay?
